Portobello Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich

Mushroom “Steak”

  • 2 pounds portobello mushrooms, stems removed and sliced paper thin on a mandolin
  • 1/2 cup grapeseed oil (or other neutral oil like safflower)
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Bragg’s Liquid Aminos (or soy sauce)
  • Fresh ground pepper
  • Quick Caramelized Onions
  • 2 cups thinly sliced sweet onion (about 1 large)
  • 1 tablespoon grapeseed (or other neutral oil like safflower)
  • Pinch kosher sea salt

Grilled Peppers

  • 1 large green bell pepper, core removed and thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon grapeseed (or other neutral oil like safflower)
  • Pinch kosher sea salt

For Serving



Marinade Your Mushrooms

  1. Whisk oil, Worcestershire, and liquid aminos together in a bowl then pour into a large shallow dish. Mix in the sliced portobellos, tossing to coat in the marinade (don’t worry if it doesn’t fully coat, as they sit the mushrooms will release liquid and everything will combine to be amazing)
  2. Let sit for at least 15 minutes and up to 30 minutes

Quick Caramelize Your Onions

  1. Place a large heavy bottomed skillet over medium high heat and add your onions (no oil yet)
  2. Cook, stirring occasionally, until they start to turn a uniform golden brown, about 10 minutes. At this point, add 1 tablespoon grapeseed oil and stir into onions with a wooden spoon, scraping any brown bits from the bottom of the pan. Cook for about 5­10 more minutes until color darkens to a dark golden brown. Remove from heat and set aside, covering to keep warm

Grill Your Peppers

  1. While onions are cooking, heat a cast iron or other heavy bottomed medium skillet over high heat. When pan is hot, add grapeseed oil then add green peppers. Cook for about 5­8 min on high heat. Sprinkle with salt. Remove from pan and set aside, covering to keep warm

Cook Your Mushroom Steaks

  1. Add mushrooms to the empty peppers skillet, turn the heat up to high, and cook while stirring often (about 8­10 minutes) until they start to look dark and slightly charred. Sprinkle with salt and pepper

Putting it all Together

  1. Cut your rolls in half and scoop out some of the inside bread. On the bottom side, pile half of the mushrooms, then top with half of the onions and peppers. On the top side, place three slices of Follow Your Heart American Slices. Repeat with the other roll.
  2. Place sandwiches open faced under the broiler for about 2 minutes until cheese is melted and bread is warm. Place the lid on each bottom and serve hot!
